House seeks to expand impeachment powers
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – A House committee Thursday is expected to take up a proposed constitutional amendment that would allow the Legislature to impeach state attorneys and public defenders who commit misdemeanors in office.
The proposal (HJR 999), filed by Rep. Jackie Toledo, R-Tampa, could go before voters in November 2018.
The Legislature already has the power to impeach the governor, the lieutenant governor, Cabinet members and judges because of misdemeanors in office.
The bill, which will be heard Thursday by the House Public Integrity & Ethics Committee, would expand that authority to impeachment of the 20 state attorneys and 20 public defenders.
