Top environmental job draws crowded field

With a Friday deadline looming, at least 138 people have applied to become secretary of the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, according to a list posted on the state Cabinet website.

Former Secretary Jon Steverson announced in January that he was leaving the post, and Gov. Rick Scott and the Cabinet set an April 28 deadline for applications.

The latest version of the list of applicants, posted on the Cabinet website Thursday morning, did not include interim Secretary Ryan Matthews.

Unlike most agency heads who answer only to the governor, the secretary of the Department of Environmental Protection falls under Scott and the Cabinet.
