COLUMBIA COUNTY, Fla. – A 20-year-old woman died in a crash Thursday afternoon in Columbia County after the car she was in overturned on Interstate 10 and hit a tree, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
Qurtajha Smith, of Merritt Island, was a passenger in the single-car crash that happened around 3:15 p.m. on I-10 near mile marker 301, troopers said.
Troopers said the 21-year-old driver, also from Merritt Island, was going eastbound on I-10 when her car went off the roadway, overturned and then struck a tree, landing on its roof.
Columbia County Sheriff's Office, Fire Rescue and Century EMS also sent personnel to the crash site, where they assisted FHP.
The driver of the car was taken to Lake City Medical Center with minor injuries. Smith died at the scene, troopers said.
