ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. – A man was injured Monday morning when he jumped through a rooftop air conditioning vent at an A1A South pawn shop, the St. Johns Sheriff's Office said.
Deputies said they responded to the area around 3:30 a.m. when a witness as a nearby business heard someone on the roof. They said they found Jonathan Michael Whitely, 20, on the roof, but he refused to show his hands and jumped through the air conditioner vent.
The Sheriff's Office said Whitely suffered disabling injuries from his jump and was taken to UF Health.
He is facing charges of criminal mischief, resisting arrest without violence, trespassing and violation of probation, which stemmed from an October arrest on burglary and theft charges.
Deputies said they are also investigating reports of a theft at an A1A South convenience store as well as several attempted burglaries of vehicles and residences in the same area around the same time.
The Sheriff's Office said additional charges are pending against Whitely as they investigate.
