Fire damages Normandy duplex

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Crews were called Tuesday night to battle a fire at a duplex in the Normandy neighborhood of the Westside, the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department said.

Firefighters responded just after 9:30 p.m. to the home on Doyon Court off Herlong Road.

Neighbors told News4Jax that the fire started in the kitchen.

"I was driving down the street and here comes five or six fire trucks. I pull in thinking it was my house, freaking out, but then I see it’s theirs. The fire trucks responded very quickly. They put out the fire, it was coming out the back of the house first, then very quickly it came out the front," said neighbor Amber Hamblin. "There was a lot of smoke. Firefighters made sure there were no animals and no people inside. They did have kids and dogs, but the dogs got out safely. The people were safe. It was just really shocking and devastating to see what they went through."

There's no word yet on the extent of the damage.
