Veterans beware of scam Choice Program phone line

VA warns imposter number attempts to access your credit card info

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs is warning veterans to beware of a phone scam that appears to take advantage of those who accidentally misdial the correct number to the Veterans Choice Program.

The imposter line is using an 800 area code instead of the correct 866 area code. The VA wants to make sure you know the correct number to call is 1-866-606-8198.

Those who use the 800 area code will get a copycat line that claims you have reached the "U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs" and the "Veterans Choice Program." It offers callers a $100 rebate if they give a credit card number.

The VA says it is taking action against this potential attempt to impersonate VA's Veterans Choice Program phone line, and is working with the Office of Inspector General to take legal action to shut down the imposter line.

If you are unsure whether called the correct number, hang up and be sure to dial 1-866-606-8198 correctly.

If you think you have been scammed, or at risk of identity theft, the VA Identity Safety Service offers help to veterans and beneficiaries. That number is 1-855-578-5492.
