St. Johns County ends evacuation re-entry tag program

Residents, business owners must now show proof or residency to re-enter

After lessons learned from evacuations during Hurricane Matthew, St. Johns County has elected to end its evacuation re-entry tag program for hurricanes.

In the past, green re-entry tags were issued to residents east of the Intracoastal Waterway and business owners were given two orange tags per business.

The tags weren't mandatory but were meant to speed up and smooth out the re-entry process as residents returned home after a storm.

County emergency management officials said evacuation re-entry will now be accomplished through proof of residency in evacuated areas.

Residents and business owners will need to show a driver's license, state identification card, utility bill or lease agreement showing an address in the evacuated area to be allowed re-entry.
