Pedestrian killed on SR 16 in St. Augustine

Man was standing in the road, troopers say

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – A 48-year-old man was struck and killed early Wednesday morning while walking along State Road 16 near North 1st Street in St. Augustine.

The pedestrian was identified by the Florida Highway Patrol as Mark Burger, 48, of St. Augustine.

Video from the scene showed a red Toyota convertible with a smashed windshield.

According to troopers, a Toyota Solara was driving east on State Road 16 near the intersection of North 1st Street about 2 a.m. when it struck Burger, who was standing in the right lane. Moments later, the driver of a Chrysler 300 following behind the Solara failed to see Burger laying in the road and that car ran over Burger, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
