Man, 54, dies while swimming in Trout River, police say

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 54-year-old man died Wednesday afternoon while swimming in the Trout River, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

Police said that Peter Davis was hanging out with friends about 4 p.m. under the Trout River Bridge on Main Street North when he decided to go swimming.

As Davis swam farther away from the riverbank, he began to struggle and then became motionless in the water, friends told police.

A witness tried to swim to Davis  to help, but was unable to reach him as the current carried Davis away, according to police.

Officers said 911 was called and the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department recovered the Davis' body from the water. 

Davis cause of death has not been determined, but there was no indication of foul play.
