Toddler drowns in Yulee pool, deputies say

Investigators say 18-month-old boy gained access to pool through pet door

YULEE, Fla. – An 18-month-old boy drowned Tuesday morning in a family pool in the Yulee area, the Nassau County Sheriff's Office said.

According to deputies, the boy was one of five children in the care of a 16-year-old babysitter at the home on Lents Road. Two of the children were the babysitter's siblings and three, including the toddler who drowned, were from a friend's family.

Deputies did CPR on the boy, and he was rushed to Baptist Health Nassau, where he died.

Investigators said they believe the boy gained access to the above-ground pool through a pet door.

The Department of Children and Families was notified.

Neighbors who live on the quiet road told News4Jax they were sad and upset about the child's death.

This was the fourth drowning of a child in an area pool since April.
