LAKE CITY, Fla. – An officer patrolling in the area of NW Lake Jeffery Drive and NW Ashley Street in Lake City on Monday night investigating the sound of gunfire found a man dead in the street.

Lake City Officer Rebecca Miles said it appeared the man had been hit by a car in addition to being shot.

The victim was later identified as 24-year-old Johnathan Ferkin, a work-release inmate assigned to Bridges of Lake City facility.

Special agents from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement joined Lake City detectives to investigate, and NW Lake Jeffrey Drive was closed until early Tuesday morning.

“It is unfortunate the victim was already deceased when we arrived, despite the swift response time,” Lake City Police Chief Argatha Gilmore said. “However, the fast work of our units allowed us to quickly secure the crime scene and preserve evidence.”

Police did not release any suspect information or other details.
