Police: 84-year-old man dies after losing control of motorized tricycle


GAINESVILLE, Fla. – An 84-year-old man died Wednesday afternoon after losing control of a motorized tricycle that he was riding, the Gainesville Police Department said. 

Officers responded just before 3:30 p.m. to East University Avenue near Southeast 43rd Street after receiving several 911 calls reporting a person was lying in the street and appeared to have severe injuries. 

Gainesville Fire Rescue personnel and GPD officers tried to render aid to the man, but he died, police said.

Police identified the man as William Thomas. 

Investigators said it appears Thomas was riding his motorized tricycle east in the curb lane of East University Avenue when he lost control of the tricycle and hit the pavement. Police said he suffered serious injuries and later died.

Police said there's no indication that Thomas was wearing a helmet or if another vehicle was involved.
