Elderly woman dies when her SUV lands in Fleming Island pond

FHP: Angelina Thrift, 89, drove into retention pond

ORANGE PARK, Fla. – An 89-year-old woman died after driving into a retention pond in Fleming Island late Monday night, according to Florida Highway Patrol.

Angela Longo Thrift, of Middleburg, was driving south on Old Pine Trail off County Road 220 shortly before 10 p.m. Troopers said she turned her Key Sportage went over a grass shoulder and into a nearby retention pond.

Her SUV floated to the center of the pond and sank. Some young people pulled her out of the water and she was taken to Orange Park Medical Center, where she died.

It's unknown what caused Thrift to drive into the pond.
