St. Simons Island woman charged with DUI after SUV strikes officer

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – A St. Simons Island woman was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence after an officer was struck by a sport-utility vehicle during a Thursday traffic stop.

Officer Justin Floyd was working a traffic stop near Retreat Avenue and Kings Way shortly after 9 p.m. when a white Ford Escape ran into his patrol vehicle and then drove off, according to Glynn County police.

The SUV was later stopped on Kings Way and Frederica. Susan Sheffield, 53, was taken into custody on charges of driving under the influence and driver to exercise due care, police said.

Police said Floyd was taken to a hospital with a back injury and later released.

Sheffield remained in custody as of Friday morning, jail logs show.
