Motorcyclist, passenger seriously injured in crash on US 1, troopers say

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. – A motorcyclist and their passenger were seriously injured in a crash Friday night on US Highway 1 in St. Johns County, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Sheryl Smith, 63, was trying to turn into the Target parking lot on US Highway 1 near Old Dixie Highway and pulled out in front of Alan Shepard, 36, who was driving a motorcycle with 30-year-old Cheryl Sutton on the back, troopers said.

Shepard lost control after slamming on the breaks to avoid crashing into Smith, causing him to lay the motorcycle down, troopers said.

Shepard and Sutton were thrown from the motorcycle, which flipped after crashing into Smith’s car, troopers said.

Shepard was taken to Flagler Hospital in serious condition. Sutton was taken to Orange Park Medical Center in critical condition.

Smith was not injured.
