Arrest made in attempted murder at Neptune Beach hotel

Shooter in custody; victim remains in critical condition, police say

NEPTUNE BEACH, Fla. – Days after a man was taken to a hospital in critical condition after being shot multiple times at a Red Roof Inn on Atlantic Boulevard, his shooter was taken into custody on unrelated charges, police said.

According to the Neptune Beach Police Department, Darius Mangram, 22, was arrested by the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office on weapons and burglary charges last Friday.

On Wednesday, Mangram was also charged with attempted murder in the Oct. 4 shooting of a 24-year-old man in Neptune Beach.

Officers responded about 7:45 p.m. that night to the Red Roof Plus+ on Atlantic Boulevard, just west of Mayport Road.

Investigators said hotel guests outside heard gunshots and went inside, where they found a 24-year-old man with multiple gunshot wounds lying in a hallway.

The man, who News4Jax is not naming, was taken to Memorial Hospital and remained in critical condition at last check, the Neptune Beach Police Department said.

Police said witnesses identified Mangram as the shooter and said he was wielding a gun in the hallway of the hotel before the shooting and got into an argument with the victim over the purchase of a vehicle.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, Jacksonville Beach Police Department and the Atlantic Beach Police Department are assisting with the investigation.
