Bill calls for higher teacher, principal salaries

A House Democrat on Monday filed a proposal (HB 389) that calls for teachers and school principals to receive a series of pay increases, starting with each educator receiving a $3,000 raise in 2018.

Rep. Shevrin Jones, D-West Park, filed the bill for the 2018 legislative session, which starts in January.

After receiving $3,000 raises in 2018, teachers and principals would receive 3 percent pay increases in 2019, 2020 and 2021, under the bill.

The measure would require the Legislature to provide money for the raises, though it does not indicate the amounts that would be needed.
