NASSAU COUNTY, Fla. – A Fernadina Beach man died early Saturday after crashing his truck while being chased by police for a previous hit-and-run crash, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Gary Denmark, 40, was allegedly driving a Chevrolet Silverado east on Wilder Boulevard when he lost control of it at about 12:12 a.m. near Ellis Landing Road trying to flee from Fernandina Beach police, troopers said.

Denmark drove off the road and continued eastbound as he tried to regain control of the truck, troopers said. Denmark then crashed into a culvert, which caused the truck to flip onto its roof, troopers said.

Denmark was pronounced dead at the scene, troopers said.

Denmark’s passenger, Dwight Hooper, of Fernandina Beach, was taken to UF Health Jacksonville with minor injuries, troopers said.

Authorities said charges are pending in the investigation.
