JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – During a 12-hour span that began Saturday evening, there were three double shootings that left three people dead and a man was found shot to death inside a crashed car.
On Saturday, a man and a woman in their 20s were shot at multiple times on the Southside after police said a fight escalated into gunfire. Officials said the man suffered life-threatening injuries.
Just before 9 p.m. Saturday, police found a 26-year-old woman dead in the street in the Woodstock area. A 29-year-old man was also shot and is suffering from life-threatening injuries.
Overnight, police found a 25-year-old North Carolina man shot to death inside a car that crashed on Interstate 95 downtown. Police said investigators took two others who were also inside the car to police headquarters for questioning. Police said the shooting was not a random act of violence.
On the Northside, a man was shot dead Sunday and a 16-year-old girl is fighting for her life. Investigators said the shooting came after an argument. Neighbors who know the family said the teen was shot in the chest and her mother’s boyfriend in the head.
Some residents told News4jax that the violence is getting too close.
“It’s really, really sad,” Northside resident David Williams said. “You don’t know, it could happen next door to you, across the street from you (or) behind you.”
News4Jax records show 117 homicides so far this year. Last year’s number was 120.
Authorities said there have been no arrests made in any of the weekend shootings.
Retired JSO officer and News4Jax crime and safety analyst Gil Smith said that finding out why the shootings occurred is just as important as finding out who committed them.
Anyone with information about the shootings is asked to call the JSO at 904-630-0500 or Crime Stoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS.
