Clay County deputy hit during crash, chase in Orange Park

ORANGE PARK, Fla. – A man was arrested in Clay County late Wednesday night after a crash and foot chase that injured a deputy.

Clay County deputies said they wanted to talk to the people in a Honda Odyssey because they were in a "suspicious location." When deputies identified themselves, that's when the SUV took off, striking one of the deputies as it pulled away.

State troopers said they caught up the SUV about 10:30 p.m. driving west on Old Jennings Road, but it left the road, struck a tree and overturned. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Matthew Scott, 20, got out and ran from troopers.

Deputies caught up with Scott, who had suffered serious injuries. His passenger was also hurt. There was was word on their conditions.

Scott will be charged with reckless driving and leaving the scene of a crash with serious bodily injury. Other charges may also be pending.

The deputy struck by the SUV was hospitalized, treated and released. While he is expected to make a full recovery, he will be out several weeks to recover from his injuries.
