Shots fired at West Melbourne police officer during traffic stop

Police search for suspected shooter

WEST MELBOURNE, Fla. – As many as 10 shots were fired at a West Melbourne police officer Monday night during a traffic stop, but no one was injured, authorities said.

West Melbourne police spokesman Richard Cordeau said an officer conducted a stop of a speeding vehicle around 9:20 a.m. on Sheridan Road.

The driver turned into a residential neighborhood on Sylvan Drive and stopped before several shots were fired at the officer, police told WKMG-TV.

The car then sped off, and the officer tried to stay close in an attempt to get the vehicle's license plate number.

More shots were fired from the vehicle at the officer, police said.

In total, eight to 10 shots were fired, according to authorities.

The culprit's car was found abandoned near Lemon Grove Avenue. A search for the suspected shooter is ongoing.

No other details have been released.
