ALACHUA COUNTY, Fla. – A 25-year-old Starke man and a 21-year-old Melrose man were killed in a single-car crash Monday night in Alachua County, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

It happened about 9:15 p.m. on County Road 225 at Northeast 199th Lane.

According to the Highway Patrol, a Volkswagen Jetta was traveling west when it veered onto the shoulder and collided with a culvert, causing it to go airborne. Troopers said the Jetta then hit a tree and overturned, landing on its roof.

The passenger, 25-year-old Austin Tison, died at the scene, troopers said. The 21-year-old driver, Austin Yarbrough, died at the hospital, FHP said.

Troopers said alcohol was not a factor in the crash.
