Reward now $5K for info in cold case double murder

Charles Durden, 27, Staffon Larry, 26, shot, left in burning SUV, deputies say

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – St. Augustine investigators need help to solve a cold case double murder -- and they're willing to pay.

Crime Stoppers has increased the cash reward for information in the slayings of Charles Durden and Staffon Larry from $2,000 to $5,000.

The men were found dead Nov. 16, 2016, inside an SUV that had been set on fire on Spring Street near Fred Waters Way in St. Augustine.

Durden, 27, and Larry, 26, had been shot before the Dodge Journey they were in was set on fire, the Medical Examiner determined.

The flames that engulfed the SUV were so hot, they melted off the writing on a nearby street sign and burned a street light. After firefighters put out the fire, officers found the two bodies inside the SUV.

The St. Augustine Police Department and the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office have been working closely with Crime Stoppers to increase tips and information, which included the announcement Wednesday of the reward increase.

Detectives are encouraging anyone with information, no matter how insignificant it might seem, to come forward. Tipsters with information are encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers at 888-277-TIPS (8477), to be eligible for the cash reward. Tipsters may remain anonymous.

Anyone with information can also contact the St. Augustine Police Department at 904-825-1074 or the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office at 904-824-8304.
