Orange Park man hit, killed by Amtrak train, troopers say

FHP: Donovan Williams was walking on tracks when he was struck from behind

ORANGE PARK, Fla. – A 26-year-old Orange Park man was killed by an Amtrak train early Wednesday evening, the Florida Highway Patrol said. 

It happened about 5:20 p.m. just south of the railroad crossing on Wells Road, near Corporate Way, in Orange Park.

According to the Highway Patrol, Donovan Williams was walking north on the railroad tracks when he was struck from behind by an Amtrak passenger train.

Troopers said he never moved off the tracks as the train approached. 

Williams died at the scene, troopers said. 

No other injuries were reported.

According to News4Jax records, Wednesday's death marked the fourth fatal Amtrak train crash this year. 

On Aug. 17, 38-year-old Caleb Osborne was killed when the pickup truck he was riding in was struck in Green Cove Springs. The driver, 41-year-old Richard Tillman, was seriously injured.

Days later, a bicyclist was struck and killed on Aug. 20 at the crossing at Post Street and McDuff Avenue. 

On Nov. 12, 61-year-old Scott Wulff and his dog were struck and killed while walking along the tracks near Roosevelt Boulevard and Edgewood Avenue.
