1 killed, 2 injured in crash with fire truck

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 30-year-old Neptune Beach man died early Wednesday morning in a crash with a fire truck on Hodges Boulevard.

The accident occurred around 2:20 a.m. at Hodges and Danforth Drive, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said.

Jacksonville Fire and Rescue was leaving the scene of a small brush fire and the truck's emergency lights were on when Juan Toledo, who was driving north on Hodges Boulevard, struck the front end of the fire truck.

Toledo and two firefighters were taken to Memorial Hospital, where Toledo died. There was no indication of the severity of the injuries to the JFRD crew, but they were not believed to be life-threatening.

There was fog in the area at the time, but Jacksonville Sheriff's Office homicide detectives were still investigating the cause of the crash.

Police said this was Jacksonville's 163rd traffic fatality of the year.
