Sidney Lanier Bridge reopens

Bridge had been closed due to ice falling from cables, crossbeams

BRUNSWICK, Ga. – The Sidney Lanier Bridge reopened early Friday evening, Brunswick police said.

The bridge in Glynn County was initially shut down Thursday after reports that chunks of ice were falling from the bridge's cables and crossbeams and becoming dangerous for passing vehicles.

The ice formed on the bridge during this week's winter storm that smacked the Southeast with sleet and snow.

Officials with the Georgia Department of Transportation said Friday afternoon that the bridge had been closed indefinitely, because it couldn't reopen until overnight temperatures remained above freezing and the ice melted.

Several hours later, police announced that the bridge was back open.

Department of Transportation officials said the bridge will remain open unless roadway conditions become hazardous to drivers.

While it was closed, drivers were asked to seek alternate routes to and from Brunswick via Highway 303 and Interstate 95.
