Fire erupts at JEA substation in Orange Park

Witnesses say they heard an explosion

ORANGE PARK, Fla. – It took fire crews about 40,000 gallons of water Saturday afternoon to extinguish a fire of a transformer at a JEA substation on Shaw Street, according to the Orange Park Fire Department.

There was no report of injuries.

Fire  officials said the fire broke out at around 4:20 p.m.  Witnesses in the area say they heard a loud explosion while driving on U.S. 17.

Electricity outages were reported in the area. The JEA website showed 2,200 power outages when the fire was first reported. All power was restored by 6 p.m.

Orange Park, Clay County and First Coast Navy fire units all responded to put out the fire.

JEA estimates approximate 1,000 gallons of mineral oil was spilled out of the transformer, but was contain on the site.
