Sheriff's Office spokesman Chuck Mulligan said the man, who is in his 70s, died at Flagler Hospital.

It's unclear if the man had gone for a swim or was out on a boat, Mulligan said.

Deputies said the man's wife told them he was despondent and left their beach home before she woke up. When she realized he was gone, she called police.

He was found unresponsive in the surf about 25 minutes later.
