CHARLTON COUNTY, Ga. – A South Georgia father came home Tuesday to find two women and a teenage boy shot to death in what was described as a double homicide-suicide, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
GBI investigators identified the deceased as Caleb Butts, 15, Kimberly Butts, 39, and Jan Kirkland, 64. It's unclear who investigators believe fired the deadly shots.
The medical examiner in Savannah is expected to conduct autopsies on the bodies Wednesday, the GBI said.
The house is about one mile off St. Marys River Bluff Road, east of St. George. The GBI and Charlton County deputies were at the home near the St. Marys River all afternoon.
Neighbors told News4Jax that the people in the home kept to themselves. Eddie Moore, who lives next door, said he was coming home from work when he learned something wasn't right.
"You could tell something was going on before I got here," Moore said. "I had texts and people calling and asking me."
Another neighbor, Lana Bliss, said she has lived on the street for 18 years and was shocked to see the police.
"This is the first time that anything like this has happened," Bliss said. "It’s a little bit unnerving. I know there's a lot of things going on in the world that make tragedies like this happen."
