JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A car fleeing a shootout in the parking lot of a Circle K gas station in North Jacksonville on Friday afternoon crashed a short time later as the driver tried to avoid a police car, leaving officers to sort out what happened and who was involved.
Jacksonville police said there was a gun battle at 1:10 p.m. at the station on Polaski Road, just north of Interstate 295, in North Jacksonville, and then a car with three people inside took off. About 2 miles away, police said the car overturned when it took a sharp turn on New Berlin Road to avoid a police car responding to the initial scene
Police said one person in the car had a gunshot wound and a second was taken to UF Health with injuries from the crash. A third occupant of the car was detained for questioning.
A dozen officers, a K-9 unit and a police helicopter were trying to find the person who fled from the initial shootout scene.
No customers or employees at the store were hit by the gunfire. They were hoping witnesses to the incident would help them learn more about what led to the gunfire and the identity of the person they were searching for.
Police at the scene did not have names of those involved, or what charges any of them would face.
