Man, elderly mother critically injured inside Bartram Springs home

Both were found seriously hurt in home on Sunday, police said

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 62-year-old man was arrested and charged with battery on his 86-year-old mother, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said Monday night.

According to police, both the son and his mother were found injured Sunday morning in their Bartram Springs home on Green Pond Drive. As of Monday night, the 86-year-old was still said to be in critical condition.

Jacksonville firefighters, then police responded about 11 a.m. on Sunday when the man's wife, who is working out of town, couldn't get in touch with them. When a neighbor looked through a window and saw a man unconscious in the house, he called the police. Officers made their way inside and found the adult son and his mother with life-threatening injuries and took them to a hospital.

The police report said the son, Mark Burgos, had lacerations to his neck, left arm and abdomen and his mother, June Burgos, had head trauma.

JSO said out-of-town family members became concerned after not hearing for a couple of days from the mother and son who lived in the home. They first called for rescue personnel, and Jacksonville Fire-Rescue called police.

Residents of the quiet neighborhood that borders St. Johns County are not used to seeing a half-dozen police cars outside a home in the area.

Melanie Gray said she'd lived in the area for three years and had never seen that level of police activity.

"I guess that can happen anywhere," Gray said.

"I've never seen so many trucks, so many emergency vehicles," said Bill Tyler, who lives across the street from the Burgos family. "There must’ve been a half-dozen police cars, a crime scene investigation truck, fire trucks came and went -- vehicles all up and down the street."

Neighbors said they had never known of any problems with the family.

"You never know what goes on behind closed doors," Tyler said. "Hope the Lord will straighten that out."
