Family of 5 and dog escape early morning Westside house fire

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A family of five, including their dog, managed to escape an early morning house fire on Jacksonville's Westside.

Dozens of firefighters were called to West 5th Street near Melson Avenue just before 4 a.m. where flames were showing upon arrival. The home had extensive damage inside and smoke damage on the outer walls of the brick home.

A woman and four children were inside when their home caught on fire. They were able to evacuate their burning home before firefighters arrived.

Firefighters said the woman was injured while getting out of the home, she is expected to be OK.

Red Cross was requested to assist the family, JFRD said.

Crews remained on scene to check for hotspots after the fire was under control. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
