Woman says home hit multiple times by bullets in shooting
Man standing outside home shot on West 22nd Street
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A woman whose home was struck multiple times by gunfire during a shooting that left a man wounded said she came within inches of being struck by a stray bullet.
"I fell on the floor screaming, 'They're shooting! They're shooting!' Next thing I know, bullets are coming through my house."
According to the Sheriff's Office, the shooting happened Wednesday around 8:15 p.m. on West 22nd Street, east of Moncrief Road. The man who was struck was outside the home. He was hospitalized for treatment, and no other injuries were reported.
Investigators with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said the shooting was a drive-by. But the homeowner, who asked not to be identified, said the shooting started as an argument outside her home.
"The suspect came in my yard while arguing with a group of men across the street. They exchanged words. He told them he will be back. He came back and shot. That's when the shooting started," she said. "It was no drivey-by. It was a shootout."
The homeowner said she called 911. She knew her front window was struck in the crossfire, but wasn't immediately aware other bullets broke through.
“My dining room side was shot. My living room side was shot. My other side of the living room was shot, and I had a bullet sitting on my floor," she said.
A bullet also went through her painting of The Last Supper, which was just feet from where she was standing.
"These are two grown idiots toughing it out in the streets with guns," she said. "They could have killed me and my family."
The shooter was believed to be in a gold, late-model Buick. There was no description of the shooter.
