JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – An explosion of gas cans in a storage shed in an East Arlington neighborhood Sunday afternoon started a fire that spread to a neighboring house, according to Jacksonville Fire Rescue.
Three people and their pets made it out of the home on Carriann Cove Court, but there was damage done to multiple bedrooms and the attic.
The Red Cross is helping put them up in a hotel Sunday night.
A fire chief at the scene told News4Jax the gas cans were empty, but it is believed that heat and pressure caused them to explode.
The homeowners from both homes said, fortunately, no one was hurt.
Fire officials say the fire started at one home and spread to the one next door.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but officials say the shed in between the homes exploded due to gas cans inside.
A neighbor who lives across the street tells me he rushed home after seeing the smoke from a mile away at a nearby park.
Andres Lopez said this fire has him double checking what is inside his garage.
“It makes me nervous, because my lawn mower is in there so I got to take that out, take the gas out, prepare for future," Lopez said.
