Man dies after shooting on East 16th Street
Officers responded to reports of shots fired early Sunday morning
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A man died at a hospital early Sunday morning after Jacksonville police say he was shot on East 16th Street near Market Street.
Officers responded to multiple calls about shots fired in the area at 1:50 a.m. but the victim had already been taken to the hospital in a private vehicle. Detectives gathered evidence at the scene and were looking for witnesses at the shooting scene, interviewing the people who took the victim to the hospital and were obtaining a search warrant for that car.
Police don't have a motive for the shooting or know who fired the shots.
Neighbors who didn't want to give their names because the gunman was still on the loose described hearing the gunfire and the fear it has created in the community.
"We heard gunshots, about seven gunshots. Some guy went over my fence, came to my door banging on my door," one person said.
"I want to get out of here now," another neighbor told News4Jax. "I’ve been here for about a year and now it’s time to move out. This is the closest anything has ever happened to my house."
This is the second homicide in Jacksonville's Urban Core this weekend. A man died after he was shot several times about 4 a.m. Saturday outside the Franklin Arms Apartments, less than 2 miles from Sunday morning's fatal shooting.
Anyone with information that could help lead police to the gunman is asked to call the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office at 904-630-0500 or Crime Stoppers at 866-845-TIPS, where they can remain anonymous and could be eligible for a cash reward.
