Driver killed, 7 seriously injured in head-on crash with van carrying Navy personnel

KINGSLEY LAKE, Fla. – A Middelburg SUV driver died Sunday night and seven Navy Reserve personnel riding in a van that was struck head-on were injured, the Florida Highway Patrol reported.

Troopers were dispatched about 9:50 p.m. to the crash on State Route 16, just west of Mary Dot Lane. Investigators said Shawn Eric Mcleod, 51, died when his SUV veered into the opposite lane of traffic and collided head-on with a van carrying seven members of Coastal Riverine Squadron 10 based at JAX Jacksonville.

The seven men were taken to area hospitals with serious injuries. Their ages range from 21 to 45 years old, and all have out-of-state home addresses.

CRS-10 conducts port and harbor security, high-value asset protection, offensive combat operations and maritime security operations in rivers, harbors and coastal waterways.

The Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash.
