3 hurt in downtown Jacksonville crash, fire

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Three people were injured, one critically, when a vehicle caught fire after a crash on a downtown street at midday Friday.

Jacksonville police said a pickup truck pulling a trailer west on Beaver Street collided with a Honda Civic northbound on Ocean Street just after 1 p.m. The pickup truck then struck a light pole and burst into flames.

The driver of the pickup was taken to UF Health Jacksonville with life-threatening injuries. According to police he was going to be stabilized and then transferred to the burn unit at UF-Health in Gainesville.

A passenger from the pickup and the driver of the car were also taken to UF Health Jacksonville, but with minor injuries.

Traffic homicide detectives said there were no witnesses to the crash, so they didn't know which vehicle had the green light at the intersection. Investigators were trying to find video that may show the intersection or witnesses who left the scene who could help with the investigation.

The intersection was closed to traffic for about three hours.
