Attorney General Bondi files emergency ruling on synthetic drugs

TALLAHASSEE - Attorney General Pam Bondi gathered her troops Tuesday and told small business owners that she's coming after them if they continue to sell synthetic drugs in their stores.

Bondi is talking about drugs like K2, Spice or Bath Salts. The effects of the synthetic drugs have been so startling that Bondi and state law enforcement officials are saying getting rid of them is an emergency.

Bondi surrounded herself with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement Commissioner, health experts, police chiefs and sheriffs to express concerns about synthetic drugs. She filed an emergency rule outlawing 22 of them, and making it a felony to buy or sell.

"[If] you're selling this stuff and you know it's illegal, you take it off your shelves when you see police officers and you put it back on, we're coming after you. And we will put you out of business and we will do everything in our power to put you out of business, because you're no better than a common, street-level drug dealer," said Bondi.

"I think it's a great idea that they're being proactive," said Channel 4 Crime Analyst Ken Jefferson.

Jefferson applauds the announcement and action by the Attorney General.

"They're outlawing it right now, taking a strong stand because they recognize the seriousness of it," said Jefferson.

The drugs targeted have wide-ranging, serious effects. Some similar to marijuana, but much less predictable and potentially much more violent.

"What it's saying is these drugs are very dangerous, we don't want them on the streets, we don't want them to be spread out throughout our state, because it has a very negative effect," said Jefferson.

FDLE Commissioner Gerald Bailey pointed out that most of the synthetic drugs named Tuesday are found in trucks stops, convenience stores, and smoke shops. Bailey warned store owners Tuesday to give up their inventory, or face the consequences.
