Boy strangled in swing-set chains to be laid to rest

Boy's funeral Saturday at Greater Beulah Missionary Baptist Church

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The family of a 10-year-old boy who died after being strangled in the chains of a swing at a Northside park is preparing to lay him to rest Saturday.

Police said Nahshon Green, 10, was on the swing set when his mother realized he was hanging from the swing, with the chains wrapped around his neck. The mother told News4Jax she and her children were about to leave the park when she noticed Nahshon entangled.

Friday marked one week since Nahshon's accident at Charles Clark Park on Sibbald Road. On Monday, his family members held hands and prayed at the very spot he lost his life.

As family members prepare for his funeral, Nahshon’s teachers at Biscayne Elementary are preparing to tell students about his passing.

News4Jax spoke with several of his teachers who said he was a role model to other students and one of the sweetest kids they knew.

Jeris Flemmings, who was Nahshon's fourth-grade teacher, said he was enrolled in special needs classes. Flemmings said he was a friend to everyone and a leader in the classroom.

“Nahshon was a really happy student. (He was) one of those students that when you saw him, it just makes you smile, because he always tried his best,” Flemmings said.

Flemmings said a crisis management personnel visited Biscayne Elementary to help grieving students and staff.

In a time of sorrow, Flemmings said she wants Nahshon's family to know he changed lives at Biscayne Elementary in the short time he went to school there.

“I just want the family to know that we love Nahshon and we are there for support for them if they need anything,” Flemmings said.

Nahshon’s parents are hoping that their son, once recognized as a student of the month, will be remembered for the joy he brought to them and so many others.

“I want the community to know that it's so hard to lose a young one. Especially so unexpectedly, “Flemmings said. “So as they see the parents, just reach out to let them know how much they care.”

Nashon's funeral will be at Greater Beulah Missionary Baptist Church. The service will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday.
