Bunnell boy hurt in fireworks mishap helped by Shriners Hospital

Flagler County Sheriff's Office helps family with transportation to Tampa

BUNNELL, Fla. – A boy who lost his hand when an altered firework stolen from a Bunnell business went off is getting help from the Shriners Hospital in Tampa.

Sheriff Rick Staly, a Shriner and member of the Bahia Shrine, reached out to the children's hospital network and the Shriners agreed to provide care at no charge to the family.

Since the hospital is located in Tampa, Staly authorized a Flagler County community patrol unit and volunteer to drive the family to and from their doctor’s visit.

Two boys, ages 7 and 8, were injured after lighting fireworks they were handling exploded at Dr. Carver Park in Bunnell. The boys claimed they found the fireworks laying around, but detectives believe they came from a burglarized fireworks business where dozens of extremely dangerous and altered fireworks were stolen.
