City leaders meet to discuss disintegrating cemeteries

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Several of Jacksonville's large cemeteries have fallen into disrepair, and City Councilwoman Gwen Yates said she's had enough.

In a meeting between Yates and city leaders Tuesday, the District 8 council member explained that she's heard complaints about Memorial Cemetery at Moncrief and Edgewood, Restlawn Cemetery on Ribault Scenic Drive, and Mount Olive Cemetery on West 45th Street.

Though the state is now overseeing operations at Restlawn, others are not being monitored. Among the problems are trash and overturned headstones at the graveyards.

One suggestion is that the city form a commission of community members to offer insight on the problem to community leaders.

"The community has said something needs to be done," said Yates. "They're quite concerned about their loved ones being there."

Tuesday's meeting was between city leaders, but there will be future meetings open to the public to discuss what needs to happen.
