Owner of capsized boat was never missing

Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission says boat broke loose during storm

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – There is no longer a search for the owner of a boat found capsized Friday morning in the St. Johns River, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission.

The Coast Guard said crews were alerted just before 9 a.m. to an overturned 16-foot center console boa, but did not receive any distress calls from the vessel.

A Coast Guard boat crew launched from Mayport about 9:30 a.m. was joined by other rescue boats, a Coast Guard helicopter from Savannah and a Jacksonville Sheriff's Office helicopter. They searched between the Matthews and Hart bridges through at least noon.

About 1 p.m., News4Jax was told the boat's owner was contacted and the search was called off.

FWC Officer Roland Green said the boat apparently broke free from the Seafarer's Marina on Trout River Boulevard during Thursday afternoon's storms and floated up river before it was spotted.

The boat was towed to the Arlington Lions Club, where the owner was expected to retrieve it.
