Baker County inmate escapes from jail in kitchen trash bin

The jail employee who took the trash out has been fired, deputies say

MACCLENNY, Fla. – A Macclenny man held on burglary, gun and drug charges managed to escape from the Baker County jail Sunday night by hitching a ride inside a trash bin, the Sheriff's Office said.

Dakota Garrett Carter, 26, was awaiting trial on a list of charges when he stowed away in a garbage cart in the facility's kitchen, according to a deputy's report.

A jail employee later wheeled the cart outside and Carter climbed out and ran away. Carter was picked up at a nearby store by his girlfriend, who drove him to Georgia, deputies said.

Deputies said Carter was located and captured at an Echols County hunting camp about 5:30 a.m. Monday. He waived his extradition and was returned to the Baker County jail.

Carter faces a list of charges including escape from a detention facility, armed burglary, grand theft, possession of a firearm by a felon and possession of methamphetamine.

Carter's 23-year-old girlfriend, Baylee Barber, was arrested on charge of aiding a prisoner escape.

The Sheriff's Office said a contract jail employee who took the trash bin out has been fired and an internal investigation is underway.
