1 arrested after shooting, SWAT standoff, police say

JSO: 2 people were barricaded in home on Cedar Point Road after shooting

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 38-year-old man was charged with aggravated assault Friday afternoon after police said he fired into a car, striking a woman in the head, then engaged in a SWAT standoff with Jacksonville police.

The woman, Jordan Burch, 27, was found with a gunshot wound in a car that crashed on Cedar Point Road about 6 a.m. Friday, police said. She was last reported in serious condition at UF Health Hospital.

According to the police report, Burch and her boyfriend went to a home on Cedar Point Road in the Pumpkin Hill neighborhood to watch movies with another couple. The report said Burch and her boyfriend did some heroin in the car in the driveway and then Burch decided she didn't want to say, sparking an argument.

Police said Josh Wright then went into the house, got a gun and came out shooting.

When Burch and her boyfriend were found in the car by police, they directed officers to the home.

JSO Lt. Richard Valentine said officers got two elderly people out of the house, but Wright and the other person, who were not responding to officers, remained inside, so police called for backup.

Shortly after the SWAT team arrived and took up positions around the home, Wright and the other person came out and were taken into custody.

After questioning, Wright was charged with aggravated assault and firing into an occupied car.

All eastbound traffic on Cedar Point was closed to non-emergency traffic during the incident.

Residents like Justin Taylor said they were concerned and that the situation was not typical for the area.

“(I) just want to make sure that my mom is safe and my kids are safe, you know? That’s my heart and soul right there,” Taylor said. “Being right here in Jacksonville, it seems like it’s an everyday thing. But out this way, you really don’t get too many issues like that, so it’s kind of crazy.”
