Westside crash ends in gunfire near 103rd Street

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - One man was injured in a shooting followed by a car crash in front of the Timber Run Condominiums near the Oak Hill Park neighborhood on Jacksonville's Westside, authorities said.

Police told News4Jax gunfire was exchanged Saturday evening between occupants of two cars, one of which then crashed near the intersection of 103rd Street and Hillman Drive. Gunfire was also exchanged after the crash, police said.

Detectives said three men got out of the cars, one of which ran into a nearby store, police said. Officers followed the man and secured the area, officials said. There was no word whether any of them were arrested.

Kristina Byrd, who lives in an apartment right off of 103rd Street, said she’s not happy bullets were shot a few hundred feet from where she sleeps.

“It’s the world. That’s what the world is coming to these days. We try and stay inside and stay out of it,” Bryd said. “This is where we live. We’ve got babies and animals. People just don’t care no more.”

Marvin Jones, who lives nearby, told News4Jax he’s stunned after hearing the gunfire. Jones said knowing the shootout was so close to his home, he would welcome any positive change.

“Somebody needs to change it. I just try my best to keep my family safe. That’s all I can do,” Jones said. “I can’t sit up here and change the neighborhood all by myself.”

One person was injured in the crash, police said. There was no word regarding their condition.

Officers were speaking with witnesses and are asking anyone with information to call the Sheriff's Office at 904-630-0500 or Crime Stoppers at 866-845-TIPS.
