Dump truck driver from Palatka killed in crash with train, FHP says

Terry Owens, 59, didn't have any passengers at time

HAWTHORNE, Fla. – A dump truck driver from Palatka was hit and killed after pulling out in front of a CSX train Wednesday morning, troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Terry Owens was 59 years old. He didn’t have any passengers with him at the time.

The crash took place just before 10:15 a.m., as Owens exited a private driveway that crosses a set of railroad tracks before intersecting with U.S. 301, just south of SE 111th Avenue in Hawthorne, the FHP said.

The train was heading north before the wreck. It struck the Mack truck on its right side.

Officials pronounced Owens dead at the scene.

The Gainesville FHP continues to investigate the Alachua County crash.
