1 dead after shootout with St. Petersburg police

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - A Tampa Bay-area man is dead after a shootout with police.

St. Petersburg Police say the Pinellas Park man was seen brandishing a gun in a parking lot late Thursday.

Police spokesman Bill Proffitt says the man drove away as officers arrived. When they attempted to stop the vehicle, the man drove into another parking lot.

Police say the man spun his vehicle around to face the police cruisers, and then he began firing at them.

Proffitt says three bullets fired by the man hit two marked police cars. Officers returned fire. The man died at the scene.

Police say drugs were found inside the vehicle, and the man had several arrests. The man's name has not been released.

No officers were injured.
