4 arrested in fatal Winter Springs VFW shooting

2 dead, 1 injured in gunfire at charity motorcycle gathering

WINTER SPRINGS, Fla. – Winter Springs police have arrested four people on Monday in the fatal shooting at a Veterans of Foreign War post.

Police said two people, Harold Liddle and Peter Schlett, were killed and a third person, David Jakiela, was critically injured in the gunfire, which erupted as a charity motorcycle ride was getting under way on Sunday morning.

Jakiela is still at Orlando Regional Medical Center in critical condition as of Monday morning, police said.

Police have charged Victor Amaro, 41; Robert Eckert, 38; David Maloney, 52; and Paul Smith, 47; with attempted homicide and homicide charges in the shooting.

According to police, the charity poker run was scheduled to start in Winter Springs and would have ended in Sanford on Sunday afternoon. Police said some attendees were from the Pennsylvania-based Warlocks motorcycle club, which had a few members come to Florida to establish a chapter in Seminole County and is not associated with the original Florida Warlocks club.

Police will hold a news conference at 2 p.m. on Monday to release more details.
