Firefighters battle Clay County brush fire

Fire has burned 150 acres of dry lake bed near Keystone Heights

CLAY COUNTY, Fla. – Firefighters continued to battle a wildfire in Clay County on Sunday that had already destroyed one home.

The wildfire has been burning for almost a week outside of Keystone Heights. Firefighters have dumped thousands of gallons of water onto the fire, which has burned about 150 acres.

Clint Breidenbaugh was sitting on his porch watching the firefighters battle the flames on Sunday. He said he feels lucky to still have his porch after his daughter's mobile home burned down a few feet away from his home.

"I thought when we left, both houses were going to be lost," said Breidenbaugh.

At times during the weekend, more than 120 firefighters worked to keep the situation under control in an effort to protect area homes.

Firefighters have cut containment lines but said people who cross those lines make it harder to control the fire.

"Well, I think like anything else, they're curious, and what we've asked them to do is kind of temper the curiosity and stay out of the areas," said Clay County Fire Chief Lorin Mock.

"We have to watch out for them, and then we're not paying attention to our own safety and security, also," added Mock.

Firefighters said the high humidity have made containing the fire more favorable.
