They said they confronted Nicholas Cannady in the breezeway of the apartment complex when he pointed a handgun at the two deputies. This led one deputy to fire his weapon three times at Cannady.

That deputy, Reginald Hyatt, rendered first aid to Cannady until Clay County Fire-Rescue personnel arrived to take Cannady to Orange Park Medical Center.

Cannady is charged with attempted murder and assault on a law enforcement officer.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the deputy-involved-shooting.

Hyatt has returned to his normal patrol assignment.
